Saskatoon saw continued strong growth in housing starts in September, continuing a trend for the first nine months of the year that has seen housing starts virtually double those of Regina.

In the Saskatoon area, home builders started 257 units in September, an increase of 35 per cent from 191 housing starts recorded the previous year, with multi-family starts accounting for much of the gain.

Saskatoon's builders started 132 single-detached homes in September, down eight per cent from the 144 units started during the same period last year. To the end of September, 1,239 single-detached units were initiated, down five per cent from 1,297 through September of 2010.

But multi-family starts last month totalled 125 units compared with 47 in September 2010. After nine months, foundations were poured for 992 multi-family units, nearly doubling the 458 units started through September of last year.

The heightened pace of construction has not been limited to the province's two major cities as the majority of Saskatchewan's smaller cities also recorded healthy gains in new home starts. Swift Current, Estevan, Lloydminster and the Battlefords have experienced significant year-over-year increases in total housing starts this year.
